The pins that are used in the assembly of many components of your AR rifle are called SPRING PINS. Commonly referred to as “Roll pins” or “Split Pins”, their design looks very much like a “C”!
- SPRING PINS / “Split pins” can only flex along its spine, 180 degrees opposite the gap, like opening and closing a book.
- When installed, they expand inside the bore of the hole, holding it in place at literally only two points of contact.
- They are made from 1050-1095 Spring Steel a lower grade carbon steel material.
- They are not passivated meaning they can corrode / rust.
- They are potentially very brittle, may sustain damage during the assembly process.
- They are a 1x (One) time usage item
- They are NOT designed to be re-used if you ever need to disassemble your rifle!
They may work fine for a while, but the potential for issues or failure are high!
The SRTLLC Coil Pin Conversion Kit contains 8 (Eight) pins, to replace the weaker “Split pins” on your rifle. The Coil pins were invented by the company called "SPIROL" way back in 1948. Other wise known as "Spiral Pins", "Roll Pins" or simply "Spring Pins".
- The Coiled Pins are a spiral design that compresses on itself during installation.
- The Coiled Pins are self-retaining fasteners achieved by radial tension applied against the hole wall, and they are the only press-fit pins designed to remain flexible after installation
- Once installed they expand inside the bore, exerting radial tension against maintaining contact over a minimum of 270 degrees of its circumference.
- The resulting friction prevents the pin from easily coming loose or falling out.
- The Coiled Pin’s ability to dampen shock/impact loads and vibration prevents hole damage and ultimately prolongs the useful life of an assembly.
- Coil pins are made from 420 Stainless Steel, much stronger than spring steel in this application.
- PASSIVATED, virtually corrosion and rust resistant.
- Rockwell C46 minimum hardness and are ASME B18.8.2 / ISO 8750 certified.
- These Coil Pins can be reused many times over in the bore they were installed in!

- Heat Treated, Stress Relieved, and Cryogenic Processed Post Winding
- Impregnation / Plating with Re-Micronized Molybdenum Disulfide Formulation
ADVANTAGES:
- XP 5-Coil spring has a heavier spring load than OEM springs, thus negating the need for a D-Fender™ ring or adding CRANE Viton O-Rings
- Use 5-Coil spring with either black extractor spring insert OR CRANE Viton O-Rings, but not both
- Enhanced 4-Coil springs maintain an extended duty cycle load of a NEW Mil-Spec spring and is recommended for use in 18"+BBL lengths for those who retrieve their brass for reloading
- While the XP 5-Coil spring is totally reliable for all 5.56 BBL lengths, it can be aggressive on case rims in 18"+length BBL rifles, and may be too strong for some bolts with extremely tight bolt face tolerances
- Extreme duty cycles provided while maintaining performance specifications
- Unaffected by heat up to 750°F
- D-Fender™ rings are NOT recommended for use with our 5-Coil extractor springs.
- Dual spring XP .308 extractor spring sets may be used with or without CRANE O-rings. May be required for use in DPMS G2 Bolts for full-auto use.

Why a Melonite Gas tube?
One of the weakest points of the gas system is the gas tube, due to the heat created during firing.
AR Gas Tubes typically are manufactured from untreated Stainless Steel construction.
"Melonite® is a thermochemical treatment for improving the surface properties of steel parts. It exhibits predictable and repeatable results in the treating of low and medium carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless and austenitic steels, tool and die steels, cast and sintered iron."
Melonite is actually the brand name for specific manufacturers.
The process in which the material is introduced to the stainless steel gas tube is actually called ferritic nitrocarburizing. This is accomplished by salt bath nitriding of the gas tube.
Melonite Gas Tubes description
The SRT Melonite Gas Tubes have an extremely durable Black Nitride finish that increases corrosion resistance, wear resistance, fatigue strength and cosmetic appeal.
These gas tubes work great under a handguard because they are more durable than standard gas tubes. Available in pistol, carbine, patrol length, mid-length, and rifle lengths.
